The Cedarville Township Trustees have been given a large grant earmarked for the repair and remodeling of the Cedarville Opera House.  The funds received are to be used  only for the remodeling effort.  Because the Opera House is on the Register of Historic Buildings, the remodeling will attempt to adhere closely to the original structure which was modeled after the Royal Albert Theater in London, England, and brought to Cedarville by Whitelaw Reid in the 1800’s.  The present building is the second as a result of a fire in the original.

As a result of the remodel effort, the Opera House will be closed Dec. 31, 2024 and remain closed until the project  is completed (possibly 2-3 years}. As this happens, the Opera House Society, which has operated the programs in the building since the 1990’s, will be dissolved. When the building is reopened it will be under professional management and will be part of the Village Revitalization efforts.

Beyond the structural efforts, the addition of elevators to bring patrons and acts to the auditorium and modern ADA restrooms are being planned. Stage lighting and the sound system will be modernized.  It is hoped that these efforts will generate interest in more performing groups being attracted. Use of the first floor spaces has not been determined at this time.

The Opera House Society wishes to thank those of you who have been loyal patrons over the years.  We are hopeful that the new remodel will make the building even more attractive to use in the future.

- Jim Phipps, Opera House Society President
